Preliminary Author Guidelines

Author Guidelines--some general suggestions:

• Books & Other Resources for Authors
• Poetry: We like good poetry, and we even write some ourselves, but poetry books are hard to sell, so we are unlikely to consider poetry  collections for publication. We are considering experimenting with a multi-author anthology of poetry and short stories sometime in the next few years. If you'd like to be notified about this project if and when we do it, send an email to banis @  sciencehumanitiespress.com with  anthology as part of the subject line and we'll include you in our e-mailing on the topic if it comes to pass.  Note privacy is important to us, and no other use will be made of your information except to notify you of events related to plans for an anthology.
• Unsolicited submissions: We receive hundreds of inquiries and submissions a month. It isn't possible to deal with all these immediately on receipt. We are unable to respond to unsolicited submissions unless they are accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed response vehicle.  Please don't send unsolicited manuscripts. Unsolicited submissions without a return envelope will be discarded.
• Don't send paper manuscripts. Paper manuscripts are an unnecessary, expensive and cumbersome way to present a book.
• We print in compact form or convert and read as ebooks to do an in-depth reading.
• We publish electronically and are interested in how a file will work in our system, so it's better to see a file.
• Paper takes up a lot of space and weight.
• How to inquire: We prefer that you send proposals by email  to banis @ sciencehumanitiespress.com with a brief description, marketing concept, and possibly a sample of the writing.
• We usually print in short print runs in-house, maintaining small inventories to meet demand.
• We are interested in good books that meet a relatively focussed need and  will sell steadily for a long time.
• Author's credentials in the area of the writing provide authority.
• The author's ability and interest to promote the book are important.
• We sell primarily through internet and special orders rather than bookstore stocking, so good reviews and ability to connect with a focussed market are important.
• How to submit a manuscript: If the concept seems to fit our portfolio needs, we will request a manuscript which can be sent as an attached email file in some common format such as plain text, MS WORD, WORDPERFECT, WORDPRO. Don't bother with things like double spacing. Plain text with minimal formatting is uasually easier to process. Usually, it's easiest to email the file as an attachment.
• If you use a wordprocessor, don't do a lot of specific formatting unless you are familiar with large document editing. Usually, we start out by removing all that formatting so we can set it up to be more flexible. See a description of working with styles in WORD as an example.
• Don't get discouraged: Even if your project doesn't fit our current needs, don't get discouraged and give up. Persistence and direction are more important than speed in achieving your goals in life.  A manuscript may need a lot of rewriting and even rethinking to be the masterpiece you want it to be.

We are most interested in books that have enduring human value, promoting the kind of world we all want to live in. We are interested in suggestions for useful projects and in acquiring books that fit our mission.
